How to Measure for a Custom Chimney Cap

By Clay Lamb

Before measuring for your cap, you have to decide what type of chimney cap you are going to need. For a top mounted chimney cap there are a few ways of measuring your dimensions. If you need a cap in a rectangular shape, you will need to measure the length and width and subtract 4” from each to create tabs. If you have a cross, T-, or L- shaped cap then you are going to measure the exact dimensions of each side.

Another method is called the screen-to-screen dimensions method. Unlike the previous method you cannot use this to measure for cross shaped, T-shaped, or L-shaped caps, only rectangles. If you are looking for a cap that is slightly smaller and therefore less expensive, then measure the outside of the flue tile area that needs to be covered and add 2” or more to create the final screen-to-screen dimensions for your chimney cap.

To have a cap mounted along the outside of your chimney, as in around the brick itself, you must take exact measurements to the nearest 1/8”. Specify that you want your cap to be outside mounted and the manufacturer will add a fraction of an inch to allow for it to fit over the top of the chimney easily. Be sure you know exactly what it is that your manufacturer needs to know before placing an order, you will be happy you took the extra care when you get a properly fitting, high quality cap for your chimney!
