How to Measure for Your Custom Chimney Chase Cover
By Clay Lamb
Most chase covers fit over the outside of the brick on your chimney. Whether you choose to have a wooden or metal chase cover, it is imperative that all measurements are accurate to the nearest 1/8”. Also, be careful when measuring: just because one side looks the same length as the other does not mean it is. Mortar joints in between the bricks may be slightly different sizes making uneven side lengths. Most manufacturers will actually add a fraction of an inch to your measurement to ensure proper clearance. Do not pad the measurements yourself or you will have a very ill fitting chase cover. If you need a hole for your flue to come up through the chase cover, the diameters must be exact. If it is too small then your flue will not fit up through the chase cover at all and if it is too big then you will have gapping in between the pipe and hole. Be sure to include the exact dimensions to each hole from all four sides of the chase cover. Unless you want the hole to be dead center, exactly in the middle, then providing these dimensions will help the hole be placed exactly. When deciding on a collar height, keep in mind that the standard collar is about 2” high and a skirt is 3” standard. |
