Why Your Chimney Liner Needs Insulation
By Clay Lamb
Why is insulation so important? First, when the flue gets very hot, insulation keeps will keep the high temperature from spreading through the masonry chimney to exterior combustibles. Also, insulation keeps flue gases warm to stabilize the draft and minimize creosote condensation. When you purchase your insulation, make sure that it is at least 1/2” thick. When wrapping the pipe, you must have at least a 1/2” inch overlap. Foil faced insulation wrap is most highly recommended, and use foil tape at least 3” thick to tape off the seam. Insulation that is not foil-faced is not usually UL listed for most stoves, inserts, or relines. It is important to wrap your insulation with mesh to protect the insulation from ripping when it is being pulled through the chimney. If a small part of the insulation is damaged it can no longer be safe for use. Without the mesh you also run the risk of damaging the liner itself. The smartest way to buy insulation is in a package type deal with the liner kit itself. Some companies even sell packages with the stove or insert, liner, insulation, and mesh for one price. This is by far the easiest way to be sure that everything will fit together perfectly and you won’t forget any pieces! |
